- Why was a national government formed in Aug 1931?
- Labour incapable of dealing with causes and impact of Great Depression
- First time Gb ever had to deal with such an econ crisis, therefore politically seemed like a Coalition best way to tackle problems
- RMD lost confidence in own party, needed freedom to take action outside of interests of working class + TUs
- Cons and Libs willing to work with RMD + made offers to do so b/w 1929-31
- King George V played role, saw depression as national crisis comparable to war, favoured a GOV with national unity to solve
- Public opinion supported coalition- GE majority. Most accepted need for cuts to stay 'on gold' and avoid inflation as a consequence of coming off gold
