  • Why did the 2nd crusade fail? - Conrad III
    • He decided not to travel with Louis VII therefore halving the power of the army
      • The destruction of Conrad’s army at the second battle of doryleum would’ve been mushy less likely if the full army was there together.
        • October 1147 - The second battle of Doryleum, Conrad III vs Mesud I (sultan of rum) 63% - 90% of Conrad’s army was defeated
    • He also refused to help the Byzantine emporer against roger of Sicily. This was specifically odd as roger was also at war with Germany
    • Conrads troops were uncontrollable and had regular clashes with locals on the way to Byzantium
      • Specific incidents at Adrianople and Philippopolis soured. The relationship between Conrad and Manuel again
    • Conrads army was against receded by frostbite and hunger due to travelling in the winter
    • Due to Conrad’s failure at the second battle of doryleaum he had no significant army to help in the crusade after October 1147
