- All cells and body tissues contain water
- All body fluids contain water e.g: saliva,sweat
- Many chemical reactions in the body use water
- It is needed for the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients from the small intestine into the body
- It removes waste products from the body in the urine
- It helps the skin keep healthy and moist
- Sources
- Drinking plain water throughout the day
- Water is found naturally in fruits, veg ect
- Water is added to many foods such as soft drinks and breads ect
- Deficiency
- Feel thirsty
- Get a headache
- The urine becomes very dark in colour
- Feel weak and sick
- The body becomes overheated
- Wrinkled skin
- Feel confused
- Changes in blood pressure and heart rate
- Excess
- Drinking too much water can cause minerals to become over-diluted
- This can affect the vital organs and could be fatal
- Amount needed
- 1-2 liters of water per day
- 6-8 medium-sized glasses of water
