  • US interest groups and election - Key terms
    • McCain-Feingold Act (2002) - bipartisan legislation, places limitations on the contributions by interest groups and business to campaigners, must put in adverts that the campaigner has approved this or that they are supporting or opposing a candidate
    • Red Boxing - on a candidates websites, usually an issue or something they are supporting which communicates to Super-PACs what they want the money for
    • Super-PAC - organisation that pools together donations and gives it to a campaign
    • 501 (C)(4) - interest groups, do not have to declare where their money comes from, social welfare organisation
    • Dark money - cannot direct the source to the donor, not traceable
    • Soft money - given for 'campaign activities' or party building activities not directly to a candidate
    • Sectional groups - promotes the interests of a particular section of society e.g teachers unions
    • Causal groups - group that represents a certain cause in society like NRA
    • K Street - street in Washington known as the centre for lobbying
    • Revolving door - previous employees of Congress going into lobbying or working for interest groups
