- What was life like in the south?
- Poor living conditions, KKK, segregation between AA and whites, little jobs available for them
- Lynching was performed by the KKK, a racist group, a famous case was Emmett Till, who was lynched for talking to a white woman

- Migration
- Between 1917-32, there were huge waves of black migration, had a big impact, communities were more diverse in the north
- Pulling towards north: friends and family, more work opportunities, easy transport access
- Pushing out of south: lynching, segregation between AA and whites, lack of freedom rights
- New Deal for AA
- Impact on AA: black voters voted for democrats
- New deal did help: Roosevelt appointed black advisors, protests against wages led to NRA putting up minimum wages
- New deal didn’t help: AA moved off projects, pay increased as well as working hours
- Legal challenges for civil rights
- What was done locally? Some AA protested about the way they were treated during ND period, black church organisations set up support systems for black citizens
- Legal challenges: number of groups were set up to organise these attempts that many AA were taking part in to challenge inequality
- Key civil rights organisations
- NAACP: 1909, led by Marshall + Wilkins, aim was to ensure political, educational and economic equality of rights of all persons
- CORE: 1942, led by interracial group of students, aim was to bring equality for all people
- SCLC: 957, led by MLK, aim was to recruit civil rights groups in the south + bring an end to black disenfranchisement
- SNCC: 1960s, aim was to actively work towards desegregation of public facilities
