  • In search for the American dream: Civil rights
    • Life the South
      • What was life like in the south?
        • Poor living conditions, KKK, segregation between AA and whites, little jobs available for them
        • Lynching was performed by the KKK, a racist group, a famous case was Emmett Till,  who was lynched for talking to  a white woman
    • Migration
      • Between 1917-32, there were huge waves of black migration, had a big impact, communities were more diverse in the north
      • Pulling towards north: friends and family, more work opportunities, easy transport access
      • Pushing out of south: lynching, segregation between AA and whites, lack of freedom rights
    • New Deal for AA
      • Impact on AA: black voters voted for democrats
      • New deal did help: Roosevelt appointed black advisors, protests against wages led to NRA putting up minimum wages
      • New deal didn’t help: AA moved off projects, pay increased as well as working hours
    • Legal challenges for civil rights
      • What was done locally? Some AA protested about the way they were treated during ND period, black church organisations set up support systems for black citizens
      • Legal challenges: number of groups were set up to organise these attempts that many AA were taking part in to challenge inequality
    • Key civil rights organisations
      • NAACP: 1909, led by Marshall + Wilkins, aim was to ensure  political, educational and economic equality of rights of all persons
      • CORE: 1942, led by interracial group of students, aim was to bring equality for all people
