    • Short Parliament
      • only three weeks long in April 1640
      • the purpose of the Parliament was in response to a number of financial issues
      • in 1639 there was a taxpayers' strike
      • instant opposition and distain as a result of personal rule
        • led by john pym - a number of MPs presented a petition against Charles criticising aspects of his rule
        • Charles was open to making concessions to Parliament but only in return for their support in granting him more finances
          • in response to opposition this ultimatum Charles dissolved parliament
    • The Long Parliament
      • motivated by a need for money
      • called in november 1640
      • Second Bishops' War left him having to pay a costly settlement
        • Treaty of Ripon - 850 per day while the Scots occupied Newcastle
      • MPs such as John Pym and John Hampden formed an opposition group against Charles
        • no calls made directly against Charles just his 'evil councillors'
    • The Root and Brand Petition
      • signed by 15,000 londoners
      • received by the House of Commons in December 1640
      • showed a degree of distain against Charles and his advisors
      • In addition when Prynne and Burton are released from prison 10,000 Londoners celebrate
      • list of mainly religious grievances from personal rule
      • ultimately called for the abolition of a number of bishops and directed a certain amount of religious policy in opposition to Charles as it was sent to commons
    • Attacks on Prerogative
      • triennial act
        • February 1641
        • meant Parliament had to be called at least once every three years
          • if not achieved they could meet without his permission
            • taking away a signficant part of royal prerogative
      • Act against forcible dissolution
        • may 1641
        • long parliament only dissolved if it gives its own permission to do so
      • a number of judges who sat in the prerogative courts (star chamber) in the 1630s were impeached
      • Laud was arrested in november 1640 and held in the tower of london until his execution in 1645
      • Thomas Wentworth was arrested and charged with high treason
        • executed on the 12th May 1641
