  • The Prague spring - jan to august 1968
    • Czech at the time =
      • - tension had been building ---> because it had become a communist state in 1948 and its policies were heavily influenced by the USSR
      • - it was a member of the Warsaw pact ---> which promoted soviet-style communism
      • - there was growing upset about the external control over czech.
        • 1956 - students and writers protested at the lack of free speech and free movement
    • Dubcek and his reforms
      • January 1968 ---> Alexander Dubcek became the leader of the communist party
        • he wanted Czech to follow its own version of communism
      • The reforms =
        • travel to the west was made available for all
        • The border with west Germany was re-opened
        • The industries were no longer controlled by the communists
        • Trade unions and workers were given more power
        • Freedom of speech and opposition parties were allowed
      • Effects of the reforms =        - USSR were concerned with the idea of Czech having closer relations with the west
        • The new policies were tolerated by the USSR for 4 months ---> known as the "Prague Spring"
          • The USSR grew increasingly concerned about Dubceks reforms ---> his new reforms meant the USSR had less control over Czech
            • August 1968 events that triggered a Soviet response =
              • Yugoslavia's president visited Prague ( Y. had refused to sign the Warsaw pact and had never accepted the USSR's form of communism)
                • This was a big sign to the USSR that Czech was no longer loyal to them
                  • The USSR recieved a letter for communists in Czech, asking for help
