- Life in the South and the Impact of Northern Migration (1917-1932)
- The South: Over 80% if black Americans lived in the South. Despite the 14th and 15th amendments, Southern blacks remained economically, legally, socially and politically inferior
- Poverty, segregation and discrimination: Most blacks were impoverished sharecroppers. Everything was segregated and even though Plessy vs Ferguson was meant to follow the rule separate but equal white facilities were superior
- Black success: Some blacks were still prosperous.
- Booker T. Washington - Influential after 1895, regarded economic improvement and education as the first necessary step for blacks and they should stay segregated until then
- W.E.B Du Bois: Aimed at legal and political equality. Established the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP)
