SECTION 2: LIFE AND DEATH
- 2.4 HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS
  - males and females are intimately connected to each other
    - 'That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh' - Genesis 2:24
  - 'You shall not commit adultery.' - Exodus 20:14
    - sexual fidelity kept within marriage
    - pre-marital sex
    - promiscuity

    - 'love the sinner, hate the sin'
    - Christians should show love and compassio towards them
    - they should not engage in sexual activity
    - 'If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination they shall surely be put to death.' - Leviticus 20:13

    - treat your body with respect - implication for a Christian's sexuality
- 2.5 MARRIAGE AND PARTNERSHIP
  - uniting two people together in a life-long bond
  - providing a secure environment for the birth and upbringing of children
  - faithful, make sacrament with God's blessing and in his presence
    - in the presence of family and friends = witnesses = shows commitment to each other
  - children will also have a Christian faith
  - Christian wedding
    - sacrament
    - traditional vows
      - promise to each other and God
    - ring = symbolism their eternal love
    - prayers + hymns = thanks to God + asking for his blessing
    - rite of passage
    - a gift from God
  - cohabitation
    - love for each other is enough to show their commitment
    - CofE - only if it will lead to marriage (gives an insight into married life)
    - RCC - sinful
    - non-religious = accept it
      - marriage = expensive
      - divorce rates = high
      - easier if relationship breaks down / is unsuccessful than than applying for a divorce
  - civil partnerships + same-sex marriages
    - CofE = homosexuality is not a sin
      - ministers can not carry out same-sex marriages
        its own clergy are not allowed to enter into sexually active relationships outside of marriage
    - sex acts are sinful outside of marriage + same-sex
- 2.6 DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE
  - 'I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.' - Matthew 19:9
  - RCC - divorce not recognised
    - only if one partner dies / annulment
      - civil divorce may be granted, marriage will continue in the eyes of God
        no remarrying
        they made an everlasting covenant in the church during the original marriage ceremony
      - annulment = if marriage is shown to be not 'valid'
    - try to solve problems in marriage in an effort to try and avoid divorce
  - CofE - only if marriage has broken down and cannot be repaired
    - can remarry
    - work through problems
      - counselling + group support
  - impact
    - lack of stability for children
      - make them feel responsible for the breakdown
    - society
      - take time off work
        strain on both individuals emotionally + financially
        causes greater poverty
- 2.7 FAMILY STRUCTURES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  - types
    - nuclear
    - extended
    - reconstituted
    - single parent
    - same-sex
  - family life
    - members should support each other through difficult times + celebrate special events
    - responsibility towards elderly/sick members
    - bring up children to follow Christian faith + teach values of love and forgiveness
    - local churches - provide support through youth groups + access to parenting courses + act as a community
    - 'But if anyone does not take care of his relatives, especially the members of his own family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever' - 1 Timothy 5:8
  - protection and nurture

      - jesus died on the cross
        parents + children should make sacrifices for each other
    - family = where children learn about love, companionship and forgiveness
      - must set a good example
    - support for other families
      - care for elderly + adopt children
    - respect for elderly = important
  - parent + children relationships
    - children should treat parents with honour and respect
      - they should consider their parents' wishes + be obedient
        'Respect your father and your mother' - Exodus 20:12
    - children = gift from God
      - care for them properly
      - teach them how to love
      - teach them to accept authority
      - teach them about God
      - take them to be baptised + promise to bring them up in a loving home
      - 'Parents, do not treat your children in such a way as to make them angry. Instead, bring them up with a Christian discipline and instruction' - Ephesians 6:4
- 2.8 CHILDNESS AND CELIBACY
  - types
    - AID
    - AIH
    - IVF
    - surrogacy
  - chasity - true love waits
    - no sexual relationships before marriage
  - contraception
    - purpose of sex is to procreate
      - interferes with God's plans
      - RCC - sex= way of showing true love, through this expression of love God works to create new life
  - 'you created evry part of me; you put me together in my mother's womb'- Psalm 139:13
