  • Context of Production
    • Rossetti sufffered from a kind of religious mania and suffered with mental health which had recouring bouts of depressions
    • She worked at Highgate Penitentiary from 1859-1869. Which helped ‘fallen women’
    • Rosetti’s mum Frances used to read to them as children readings from the Bible and the writings off Augustine or maralistic stories
    • Typically Rossetti’s poem deals with a concern with individul salvation rather then a social reform .
    • She also had a  progressive view that a mistake or sexual misdemeanour should not be condeemed a women for the rest of their lives .
    • Being a women in Victorian society meant that you were doubly judged - God and society .
    • Rossetti was a reserved and quiet young woman who, when she was 17, refused the proposal of James Collinson
      • This shows Rossetti’s religion was seen as more important than her relationships.
        • Rossetti was in love with Charles Cayley, who also worked in translating poetry. She was again held back by her religion
          • They remained close friends until his death, which suggests that religion only limited her romantic relationships, not her social circle.
