  • Resurrection vs Reincarnation
    • Reincarnation [hinduism]
      • When we die, our souls [atman] live on and are reborn to eventually be connected with Brahman
      • However we lead our lives makes a difference in our next life - KARMA
      • Samsara is the cycle of rebirth
      • The individual must keep their dharma [duty], family, ethical and religious to accumulate good karma
      • A reborn soul carries no past memories but its state [rich or poor] is due to their previous life
        • Some children however appear to remember event in which they weren't present and deja vu
      • THE PHYSICAL WORLD IS A DREAM LIKE STATE AND BRAHMAN IS REALITY
    • Resurrection
      • Traditional christian belief and the main example lies on the resurrection of jesus
        • (Matthew 27: 52-53) "The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life... after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people"
      • Christ often appears to talk more of SPIRITUAL RESURRECTION
      • St Paul wrote about resurrection involving TRANSFORMATION OF A PERSON
      • When does resurrection happen?
        • traditionally it happens at the end of time
          • Question of what happens prior? are they simply asleep?
        • Many however believe that when the body dies the soul is united with God
      • Catholic belief
        • Most souls go to purgatory where they experience PUNISHMENT or PURIFICATION
          • This is to prepare them for the Beatific Vision
            • Catholic belief
              • Most souls go to purgatory where they experience PUNISHMENT or PURIFICATION
                • This is to prepare them for the Beatific Vision
                  • These souls are then ready to be united with a resurrection body
            • These souls are then ready to be united with a resurrection body
        • The problem of evil
          • IF GOD IS JUST THEN WHY DOES IT APPEAR THAT WRONGDOERS THRIVE AND GOOD PEOPLE SUFFER?
          • Theodicies [augustine, irenaeus, swinburne] place great emphasis on the role of free will as an explanation for evil and people are morally accountable for actions
          • If God has the power to judge, Gods goodness can be challenged if he fails to punish
          • Predesination and divine election
            • Our afterlife is already predetermined by God, we are either going to heaven or hell
            • John Calvin is the main thinker in this and he believed whether a person is amoung God elect or not is a mystery
            • Peoples actions can be a sign or whether they are amoung the elect [with God] or not
            • Predestinationcan be found in the Bible - revelation
      • Heaven and hell
        • Resurrection

        • Many religious traditions believe this [christianity, islam] HEAVEN is the ultimate goal whereas HELL is punishment and separation from God
        • Hell is thought of as a state of suffering after death some christians find it unhelpful because it doesn't communicate the ideas of God being loving and forgiving
          • Many would argue though that a failure to punish people would contradict God being just
