  • Religious divisions and conflicts Pt.3
    • Conflict over catholic influence in court.
      • Charles' court was promiscuous.
        • As with the political pragmatism, mirrored James I.
        • Favourites were debauched, like Buckingham and and Rochester who died at 33 of alcoholism and syphilis.
      • Number of high profile Catholics reinforced idea of popish conspiracy.
        • Key Catholics at court:
          • Henrietta Maria (Kings Mother)
          • Catherine of Braganza (Kings Wife)
          • Kings Brother, James Duke of York.
          • George Digby, Earl of Bristol.
        • Leading ministers of Cabal (67-74) were also an issue:
          • Thomas Clifford was Catholic
          • Arlington was catholic sympathiser.
      • Only under foreign policy did Charles drift, was constantly drawn to King Louis XIV, or rather his finances.
      • Charles' aesthetic style of court reinforced the impression of Catholic influence being adopted. Baroque architecture, painting and music indoctrinated into court.
        • Courtiers were frequently drunk.
    • Charles' desire to broaden the Church of England at the restoration was stopped by the Political Nation.
      • They remained more conservative than their monarch.
        • Resulted in Rigid Anglican church alienated many dissenters who like the Presbyterians were essentially moderate and wanted to be loyal to the church and the state.
          • These radicals suffered great persecution.
      • Mostly, radicals and dissenters became more quiet after the restoration. However after 1660, slowly religion became more of a personal rather than a public issue.
