      • Nixon opposed desegregation to appeal to White voters
      • Until 1973, he blocked all court orders requiring 'bussing'
      • After the resignation of 125 people of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, he openly admitted in 1970 that he supported desegregation, but opposed 'bussing'
      • 1969 - 68% of African American children were attending segregated schools in the South. When he left office, the figure had dropped to 8%
    • Some Republicans thought he was being too sympathetic to the Civil Rights movement
      • Governor of California, Reagan, and Buchanan began to campaign to exterminate the influence of Liberals
