      • nationalism and republicanism were brought back into China
    • Reforms = 1902-1911
      • Cixi fled due to boxer rebellion
      • she returned and set up the 'hundred days reform'
      • abolishing the civil service
      • creating new modern schools
      • sending students abroad to study
      • abolition of foot binding
    • Warlord Era = 1916-1928
      • the warlords = leaders with control over towns and villages
      • they used violent and brutal methods
      • they had private armies
      • Chiang Kai-shek and Mao = came together to fight the common enemy ---> the warlords!
        • the formation of the UNITED FRONT
      • they made agreement with foreign powers
    • GMD
      • led by Chiang Kai-shek
        • his aim was to unite china under his leadership and make it into a republic free from foreign interference
      • the major nationalist party in China
      • the ideas of the GMD were based from the 3 principles of the people
        • democracy, nationalism and people's livlihoods
    • they took control as there was nobody with full authority over China
    • CCP
      • led by Mao
      • they believe in the ideas of Marxism
      • they would arrest and detention people without trial as a way of control
      • had control of army and expanded the police
    • The united front
      • Purpose = destory warlords, expel foreigners, improve lives of the people
      • led by Mao and Chiang Kai-shek
    • 1927 - the shanghai massacres
      • the GMD attacked the CCP in shanghai
      • hundreds were rounded up, arrested and killed
      • caused by disagreements between the 2 sides
