- Be careful when using water and the electronic balance.
- In activity 2, make sure your modelling clay object isn't too big, if the measuring cylinder overflows, you won't be able to measure the increased volume accurately.
- Method 1: Regular Shaped Object
- 1. Measure the length, width and height of a regularly shaped object, and record the dimensions.
- 2. Calculate the volume using the formula; volume = length x width x height. Record it.
- 3. Measure the mass of the object using the balance. Record it.
- 4. Calculate the density using the formula; density = mass / volume. Record it.
- 5. Repeat for two more rectangular objects.

- Method 2: Irregular Shaped Object
- 1. Fill the measuring cylinder to 50cm cubed with water from the beaker. Record the volume.
- 2. Take a blob of modelling clay and squeeze it into any shape you like, so long as it will fit into the measuring cylinder. Measure and record the mass of the modelling clay shape.
- 3. Slide the modelling clay shape into the water by tilting the measuring cylinder at an angle. Make sure its totally covered.
- 4. Measure the new volume and record this. Calculate the volume change and record this.
- 5. Calculate the density of the modelling clay shape by using the formula; density = mass / volume. Record it.
- 6. Repeat this twice more for different sizes of modelling clay shapes. Record the results and calculate a mean value.

- 4. Calculate the mass of the liquid by calculating the difference between your two previous values.
- 5. Finally, calculate the density of the liquid using the formula; density = mass / volume.
