  • Othello Context
    • Italy was often used in Jacobean dramas to explore themes of chaos, sexual deviance and image versus reality
    • Black people were associated with the devil
    • A Jacobean audience would not have know what a Moor looks like, so Othello's skin colour was probably interpreted a darker than an actual Moor.
    • Cyprus was the supposed birthplace of Aphrodite- the goddess of love
    • Tragedy; hamartia, hubris, catharsis and pathos
    • Venetian society had a stricter class division than Britain- Iago's resentment
    • Othello both conforms to and challenges the Renaissance stereotypes of race
    • Iago is a Spanish name- early Jacobean/late Elizabethan audience saw the Spanish as the enemy
    • Venetian women were rumoured during this time to be whores and cheating on their husbands
