- Italy was often used in Jacobean dramas to explore themes of chaos, sexual deviance and image versus reality
- Black people were associated with the devil
- A Jacobean audience would not have know what a Moor looks like, so Othello's skin colour was probably interpreted a darker than an actual Moor.
