  • Osmosis
    • Osmosis in Plants
      • Rely on osmosis to support stems and leaves.
        • When the water moves into plant cells, the vacuole swells
          • It pushes cytoplasm against the plant cell walls, pressure builds up till no more water can enter cell
            • This makes the plant cell turgid
              • ? must be higher conc of water OUTSIDE cell
                • If not then water moves out the vacuole and the cell shrinks, collapses and becomes flaccid.
    • Osmosis in Animals
      • If water in cells is used up/produced by chemical reaction, then osmosis brings water in/out. This keeps balance in the cells
        • If solution outside cell is more dilute, water moves into the cell, which causes it to become turgid and it may burst.
          • The cell can no longer survive
            • If solution inside cell is more dilute, then water moves out of cell. The cytoplasm will be too concentrated and the cell will shrivel and become crenated.
        • If solution inside cell is more dilute, then water moves out of cell. The cytoplasm will be too concentrated and the cell will shrivel and become crenated.
