- OSI model
- Physical player
- Describes physical properties of the network eg. cables, voltages and frequencies, bit encoding, and transfer rates
- Data Link Layer
- Decides what order data is sent and received and finds the physical device on the network
- Network Layer
- Transmits and routes data packets through the shortest path possible towards the network of their destination (Shortest period of time is taken not shortest distance
- Transport Layer
- Guaranties that data is delivered from one end to the other, it also handles error checking and correct transmission of sent/received data
- Session Layer
- Controls the communication that happens between devices that are connected to each other, it starts, manages, and terminates connection sessions eg. login rights, permissions, access rights
- Presentation Layer
- This layer converts data between formats required for applications and transmissions over network, also it encrypts, compresses and translates when necessary
- Application Layer
- Is made of network aware applications and is the layer that users interact with eg. emails, web browsers, and network drives
- Mnemonics
- It assists the memory
- Physical player
