- 'Opposition to African-American Civil Rights remained powerful throughout the period from 1865-1992. How far do you agree?
- Argument Against
- Congressional Reconstruction. 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments
- Attitudes of Federal Government: Brown vs Board of Education Case (1954) Little Big Rock Highschool and the assistance of militia.
- Lyndon B Johnson: 1964 Civil Rights Act
- Racism decline in 1960s. March on Washington in 1963 saw many white people joining to help support black civil rights
- Argument For
- The KKK. Southerners resorted to secret organisations because of reconstruction and military rule. First formed in December 1865. Wore white hoods, burnt flaming crosses and had secret oaths. Physically attacked, beat, lynched and murdered. Attacked members of Freedman's Bureau. Efforts to stop black men from voting and efforts into keeping schools segregated. When found out corrupt, appeared that members of the state like government officials were part of KKK.
- Southern State Legislations such as complex devices added to prevent black men from voting. e.g. Mississippi Literacy Test and Grandfather clauses
- Rodney King Affair to some extent: Traditional debates around black civil rights still very much alive.
- Jim Crow Laws: introduction of black codes, franchise ect.
- Attitudes of federal: Supreme Court- Slaughterhouse Case and Plessy vs Ferguson shown reluctance for support.
