- MU123 UNIT 1
- Rounding Numbers
- 1. Look at the digit immediately after where you want to round.
- 2. Round up if this digit if 5 or more.
- 3. It stays the same if it is 4 or less.
- Significant Figures
- The first significant figure of a number is the most important digit for telling you how big the number is.
- Then the rules for rounding numbers should be applied.
- Order of Operations
- Brackets
- Indices
- Division
- Multiplication
- Addition
- Subtraction
- Percentages
- To express a number as a percentage of another number: (first number)/(second number) x 100%
- To calculate a percentage of a quantity, the percentage should be expressed as a fraction or decimal and multiplied by the quantity.
- Increase/Decrease: (actual increase or decrease)/(original value) x 100%
- Fractions
- To find an equivalent fraction to a given fraction, multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number.
- When you divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction by a whole number of more than 1, this is called cancelling the fraction. When a fraction has been cancelled to the smallest form, it is said to be in its simplest form, or lowest terms.
- To turn a mixed number to a top-heavy fraction: 1. Multiply the whole number by the numerator. 2. Add the numerator. 3. Then put this new number as the numerator.
- To turn a top-heavy fraction to mixed number: 1. Divide the numerator by the denominator. 2. The answer is the whole number and the remainder is the numerator.
- Converting Between Units
- To convert to a larger unit, you must divide.
- To convert to a smaller unit, you must multiply.
- Negative Numbers
- Adding and Subtracting
- Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting the corresponding positive number.
- Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding the corresponding positive number.
- Multiplying and Dividing
- If the signs are different, then the answer is negative.
- If the signs are the same, then the answer is positive.
