- Many of these actions were designed to draw attention to condition of NAs and put pressure on politicians to address injustices of past
- Establishment of AIM
- 1968
- Main aim was to tackle discrimination many young NAs were facing
- Established group to patrol streets and monitor police activities
- Resulted in decline in number of arrests and imprisonment of young NAs
- A fish-in (as opposed to a sit-in)
- Staged in Washington state when State Supreme Court failed to uphold treaty rights stating that NAs had right to fish in Columbia River
- Publication of significant works of literature
- These made many Americans, and others, aware of NA history and culture and problems they were facing
- Works included:
- Vine Deloria Jr's Custer Died for Your Sins
- Perhaps most famous of all, Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
- Pursuing cases through Supreme Court to gain return of former tribal lands
