- Summary
- In the evening we are introduced to Elsie, we see John and Elsie’s bond in a conversation in the drawing room. John tells Elise he is going to find a way to join the army. John opens-up about how he feels and explains the reason he wants to join is to ‘be someone else for a while’ Elsie explains how she doesn’t want her brother to join the army.
- We also learn how there was another sibling called Josie. The siblings are interrupted by the sound of someone coming down the stairs. They hide cigarettes and drinks, and Elise says to tell them she’s gone to bed.
- Rudyard enters and John explains he is going to enlist as a private soldier. However, Rudyard tells John to wait and see what he can do. Rudyard tells John how proud he is of him.
