  • Modernity, Late Modernity and Post Modernity
    • Modernity is...
      • a period of time when, ordered rational thinking. Science was seen as ans
      • Modernist theories of structuralism 'grand narratives' how the world got how it is
      • Modern theories claim a monopoly truth - objectively right about the way the world is
      • imdusttialisation 18th century. Nation territory. State organisation ie. welfare state
      • Capitalism; societies are based on private ownership
      • more freedom to define identity
    • Postmodernism
      • progressed from modernity
      • service industries taken over by manufactured ones
      • Pluralism of culture and roles. People interpret society differently ie own identities depending on circumstance
      • sociology has moved on from a time when meta narratives answer all problems. Range of competing theroies out there which have something to say about society
    • KEY DEBATE: sociologists all agree modernity and postmodernity- differ which one currently in
    • Classical Theorists ie. Mark, Weber
      • Durkheim- Modernity defined by organic (all work together in divisions of labour) solitarily and collective conscience
      • Marx: Modernity is defined by capitalism. Society has advanced but is critical due to alienation + exploitation
      • Weber: Modernityprob 'iron cage of rationality' rational thought stops human emotions. Recognises improvements but still concerned
    • Giddens and Late Modernity
      • define late modernity as : capitalism, industrialisation, surveillance, military power
      • In Modernity there are global risks ie, nuc war. People more aware and doesn't provide stability
        • Giddens describes this as juggernaut of modernity where they feel secure and unstable
      • Beck and 'the risk' of Late Modernity
        • science helps create risk, as people experience risk they become experrts on the eareas thar concern collecting data reflecting risks
          • As a result modernity generates risks and attempts to tackle them
      • we are in late mod not fully modernity yet, as one aspect changes so do the rest
    • Postmodernists
      • we've moved beyond modernity into a new kind of society
      • Harvey
        • accepts that there are changes in society but the nature of knowledge has not changed, thus we do not need a new methodology to investigate
        • post modernism represents not a compete rupture of modernism but a new 'cultural dominant' where elements that could be found in modernism appear in postmodernism with added intensity
      • Critique Baudrillard not PM no more real than the incoherent picture before modernity
        • modernity has 'ruptured' and became a new type of society. Rejects meta narrarive ie. marx fem
        • society is now dominated by media, hyper reality and simulacra reality tv/ tv reality
      • PM argues there are no criteria to prove theory true or false. We can't improve/ gaurentee knowledge is correct
      • reject metanarratives ie. marx as they've helped created oppression that imposes their version of truth on others
      • embrace diversity rather than impose our beliefs
      • Lyotard knowledge is a series of 'language games' which are ways of seeing the world. PM society better because ethinic minorities etc now heard
        • criticises metanarratives but in a sense creating new meta narrative
      • Criticisms : PM critique society no suggestions how to improve it
      • critique: has cap defeated marx thinking? recession
