- Interference of Waves
- When two waves meet at a point they cause a disturbance
- Waves can meet in the same direction and reinforce each other
- Constructive interference
- Waves can meet in opposite directions and cancel each other out
- Destructive interference
- The total amplitude of the waves is the sum of displacements
- Waves can meet in the same direction and reinforce each other
- The pattern of loud and quiet is called an interference pattern
- At points, sound waves will be in phase (constructive interference)
- At points, the sound waves will be exactly out of phase (destructive interference)
- To get a stable interference pattern, you need coherent wave sources
- Sources
- Waves at the same frequency and wavelength
- The waves are in phase
- Waves have the same amplitude
