- Improving Aerobic Performance
- Hypoxic tents
- LEGAL ERGOGENICAID
- PpO2 is reduced in a tent, athletes sleep/live/ train in this in order to simulate altitude training
- Altitude training- reduced amount of O2 available means more RBCs are created to carry more O2 to muscles- more efficient at O2 delivery once athlete returns to normal sea level
- Blood doping
- When blood is taken out of the body and then training is done. Blood is then re-inserted just before event which increases the amount RBCs in the body
- Allows more O2 to be carried in the body during event
- ILLEGAL
- Risks
- Increased blood viscosity
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased risk of heart failure, strokes or thrombosis
- Infection
- Circulatory system overload
- When blood is taken out of the body and then training is done. Blood is then re-inserted just before event which increases the amount RBCs in the body
- EPO and rEPO
- EPO-erythropoietin
- Hormone which stimulates RBC production
- rEPO- recombinant erythropoietin
- Taken to do same job as EPO does but without the natural stimulation
- ILEGAL
- Risks
- Increased blood viscosity, elevated blood pressure, increased risk of heart failure, strokes and thrombosis
- EPO-erythropoietin
- Altitude training
- Altitude training- reduced amount of O2 available means more RBCs are created to carry more O2 to muscles- more efficient at O2 delivery once athlete returns to normal sea level
- Continuous/Interva/Fartlek training
- Hypoxic tents
