- High Blood Pressure & Heart Disease
- Carbon monoxide and nicotine from smoking increases blood pressure.
- Having a poor diet can lead to heart disease.
- Saturated fats can cause a build up of cholesterol
- If you get too much cholesterol it starts to build up in the arteries- this forms plaques in the artery wall which narrows the arteries.
- High salt levels can increase blood pressure
- High blood pressure increases risk of damage to arteries- this encourages the build up of plaques.
- Narrow arteries increase the risk of a heart attack
- If the coronary arteries become narrowed the blood flow to the heart is restricted and the heart receives less oxygen.
- A thrombosis (blood clot) restricts blood flow.
- if a blood clot occurs in a narrow artery the heart will be blocked off completely.
- If blood flow is blocked completely an area of the heart will be cut off from its oxygen supply
- If the oxygen supply is cut off it causes a heart attack.
