  • Glorious Revolution and it's consolidation Pt.2
    • William had his own forces occupying London. They remained until 1690.
    • There was an initial discussion over succession.
      • Whigs argued that James had 'broken the fundamental laws of the constitution' and forfeited the throne.
      • Tories argued James was only incapacitated. And William and Mary should rule as regents.
    • William said in a secret meeting that he would go back to Holland unless he was made King.
      • Lords agreed with 2 conditions:
        • 1) His wife Mary would share the title as monarch although without the power.
          • 2) If Mary died and William married again, any children from his second marriage would be behind Mary's sister in the line of succession.
          • These were confirmed and agreed on 8th February.
    • Declaration of Rights made by Parliament
      • No Catholics would never inherit the crown.
    • On the 13th February, formal ceremony offering the crown to William and Mary.
      • The declaration of rights were read out.
    • Coronation:
      • 11th April
      • Different oath was read out, indicating new position and relationship with Parliament.
        • Acts related to this were:
          • Mutiny act 1689, prevented creation of any standing army without the consent of parliament.
          • Toleration Act 1689 exempted dissenters from penal laws if they took the oath of allegiance.
          • 1690, watered down declaration of rights was passed as the bill of rights.
            • Was a limited constitutional force
    • Financial Settlement
      • 1690 a revenue of £1.2 million  a year settled for the crown.
        • Half for civil government and half for war.
          • Crown was immediately in debt.
    • Revolution in Multiple Kingdoms.
      • Scotland
        • William  summoned the convention of estates, which was a meeting of scottish elite in 1689
          • Scottish Jacobites refused to attend.
          • Others agreed that James had forfeited the throne and it was now vacant.
