    • Ghettos -
      • when Nazis invaded Poland in 1939 - they built ghettos
      • walled off, guarded, parts of cities where jews were forced to live
      • In warsaw, 380,000 jews (30% of the population) were forced into less than 3% of the city
      • by 1942 - 50,000 had died from hunger, cold or disease
    • Death squads -
      • 1939-41 = they followed the german army into Poland and USSR, and killed any civilians who the Nazis though 'undesierable"
      • by 1945 = 1.5 million, jews, gypsys and more were killed
    • The final solution =
      • by '41, the treatment of the jews were fiercely debated among nazi leaders
      • there main concern was cost
      • some believed they were cheap labour for the war
      • others thought that those running ghettos were needed in the army
      • jan '42 - agreed that they would be sent to camps
    • The home front -
      • from 1939-42 - life in germany was relatively undisturbed by the war
      • morale was good and standard of living was high
      • 1942- it all changed
        • morale fell as german attack on USSR failed
        • standards of living fell (food shortages)
        • huge bomb attacks on german cities
    • 'Total war' =
      • feb '43 - 94,000 german soldiers surrendered
      • 18 feb - Goebbels made a radio speech calling on all germans to show the allies they were not defeated or worn out
      • everything was to give way to war productions-
        • longer working hours
        • all women 17-45 to work
        • bars, clubs, luxury shops and restaurants to shut
        • more rationing
        • travel restrictions
    • Bombing -
      • 3.6 million homes destroyed
      • 7.5 made homeless
      • 300,000 - 400,000 civilians killed
      • july '43 - 50,000 german civilians died in one week
    • Opposition to hitler -
      • as war went badly, opposition grew
      • Nazis arrested or killed anyone found passion info out of the country, or helping the allies
      • opposiiton grew as policies about freedom of speech, religion and jews became more extreme
    • Edelweiss pirates -
      • an anti-nazi youth group
      • there were around 2000 by '39
      • after bombing increased and morale fell - made them more daring
      • smashed factory eqipment to disrupt war production and stole guns and explosives
      • Himmler ordered a crackdown - hundreds arrested
      • some were hung as a result of anti-nazism
