    • Golden Years (1924-1928)
      • Politics - most voted for pro-Weimar parties, no violent uprisings
        • Stresemann was a strong leader and SPD was still in coalition, providing continuity
      • Economy - recovery after hyperinflation, Dawes Plan gave loans from USA (800mil marks)
        • Production increased to 33% above pre-1914 levels by 1929
        • Young Plan - 1929 - reduced reparations payments so they only paid what they could afford
      • Foreign affairs - accepted as a greater power for 1st time since WWI
        • Allowed to join League of Nations in 1926
      • Culture - new art and music styles e.g. cabaret clubs
        • Berlin was 3rd largest city worldwide so a popular location for artists like Otto Dix who made anti-war purposes
      • Government was still weak and unstable, unemployment levels
    • Wall Street Crash 1929
      • A crash in share value in American Stock Market so US banks demanded their loans back
        • This caused the Great Depression in Germany
        • Caused closure of businesses, massive poverty and unemployment
          • 6 million unemployed by 1932
      • Lack of trade as Depression was worldwide
      • German production halved in 3 years
        • Food prices were kept high to protect farmers so many relied on soup kitchens
      • Weimar government became unpopular as they raised taxes and cut benefits
        • 15% of jobless had no  benefits
      • Coalition governments were slow to make decisions and amend this
      • Public turned to extremist parties as they promised an end to democracy & a quick fix
        • Votes for Nazis rose from 3%-37% from 1928-32
    • Hitler becoming Chancellor
      • Made Chancellor in July 1933. Use VODKA to remember why
        • Promise to stop Treaty of VERSAILLES
        • ORGANISATION - trained members in public speaking and updated Nazi policies so they were more popular
        • Promised jobs to those left unemployed from Great DEPRESSION
        • Promised to stop communism from the KPD
        • ABILITY - a great public speaker
      • By 1932 they were the largest party in the Reichstag
        • Seats rose from 12 in 1928 to 230 in July 1932
        • They had 37% of seats but no overall majority
      • Hitler was underestimated by Hindenburg and von Papen
        • They thought they could control and use him to get rid of communism
