- Stresemann was a strong leader and SPD was still in coalition, providing continuity

- Production increased to 33% above pre-1914 levels by 1929
- Young Plan - 1929 - reduced reparations payments so they only paid what they could afford
- Foreign affairs - accepted as a greater power for 1st time since WWI
- Allowed to join League of Nations in 1926
- Culture - new art and music styles e.g. cabaret clubs
- Berlin was 3rd largest city worldwide so a popular location for artists like Otto Dix who made anti-war purposes
- Government was still weak and unstable, unemployment levels

- Wall Street Crash 1929
- A crash in share value in American Stock Market so US banks demanded their loans back
- This caused the Great Depression in Germany
- Caused closure of businesses, massive poverty and unemployment
- 6 million unemployed by 1932
- Lack of trade as Depression was worldwide
- German production halved in 3 years
- Food prices were kept high to protect farmers so many relied on soup kitchens
- Weimar government became unpopular as they raised taxes and cut benefits
- 15% of jobless had no benefits
- Coalition governments were slow to make decisions and amend this
- Public turned to extremist parties as they promised an end to democracy & a quick fix
- Votes for Nazis rose from 3%-37% from 1928-32
