- Size
- a group with larger support can put more pressure on decision makers
- groups with less support tend to be drowned out by bigger groups and struggle to promote their cause
- Funds
- Groups with bigger funds can afford more public campaigns, employ lobbyists etc
- Groups with less funds will find it difficult to find resoursesand promote their cause
- Public Mood
- decision makers are more likely to support a popular cause
- can turn politicians against groups due to the issues they promote or the methods they use
- Strategic Position of a secular group
- Secular groups who promote a vital part of society or the economy eg the NHS are more likely to be successful
- less important causes tend to be ignored, especiallyif they're competing against another bigger group with an opposing cause
- The Attitude of the Government
- If a government is sympathetic to the cause it is more likely to be successful eg Labour and TUs
- If the government is determined to follow a cause that the group opposes it will be a failure eg 2003 Stop the War Coalition
