- Introduction
- Christianity
- Define marriage - an interpersonal relationship (usually sexual) which has legal or religious recognition
- Symbolism of Marriage

- Instead, the couple administer the sacrament to one another in the presence of God.

- Eastern Orthodox Church - disagree with Western Views.

- Bible teaches 'homosexual offenders' are among those who 'will not inherit the kingdom of God.' (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
- Catechism teaches that a marriage is a mean 'to produce children' (St Augustine) and this is not possible in a homosexual relationship.
- Teachings are generally followed in CofE churches.

- E.g. Catholic Church
- Believe that marriage cannot be dissolved through divorce.
- An eternal covenant between God and couple 'until death do us part' - transcends the power of Earth.
- So divorce is wrong.
- "Anyone who divorces his wife causes her to commit adultery" (Matthew 5:31-32)
- And 'thou shalt not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14)
- As is remarrying after a divorce.

- Relationship between Sex and Marriage
- Catholic Teachings can be seen through St Augustine
- Sex is to be restricted to marriage because the purpose of sex is procreation. There should be a 'certain sense of sadness for this regrettable task' even when sex is fulfilling its purpose.
- Sex outside of marriage is a sin. Couples who sin in this way cannot receive communion.
- "You shall not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14)
- "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled" (Hebrews 13:4)
- But Jack Dominion would disagree.
- Accepts premarital sex, one-off adultery and homosexual sex as fine if there is a loving and committed relationship. Sex is powerful and should only occur in a strong and continuing relationship.
- Protestant Churches
- Believe sex can occur outside of marriage, provided that the relationship is a omitted and permanent one.
