    • why are ethics a concern of a psychologists
      • the attempt to gain valid/ true knowledge about human behaviour and thinking is often prevented when people know that they are being studied
        • artificial behaviour produces poor validity

        • a similar group of people are asked if this is acceptable, if this group agrees then consent is 'presumed'
      • prior general consent
        • participants give their permission to take part in a number of different studies
      • retrospective consent
        • asked for their consent after debriefing, subject to deception
    • dealing with deception and protection from harm
      • during the debriefing the participant shoul be made aware of the true investigatations
        • also what their data will be used for and their right to withdraw
        • reassured and made sure they are mentally feeling good (could require counselling)
    • confidentiality
      • must be anonymus
  • briefing the research to participants
    • the execution of the research
      • debriefing informing participants about findings
