  • Tissues
    • Simple Cuboidal Epithelial
      • Structure:
        • Cube-shaped
        • Spherical nuclei.
        • Line ducts and tubes which can allow materials to pass through.
      • Function:
        • Diffusion
        • Absorption
        • Secretion
          • Is the process of releasing substances into that fluid or tissue.
        • Protection
        • Large surface area which improves the efficiency of both absorption and secretion.
        • Move substances out of the fluid they are surrounding during diffusion and absorption.
      • Location:
        • Kidney Tubules
        • Sweat Ducts
        • Breast Tissue
    • Simple Squamous Epithelial
      • Structure:
        • Very flat
        • Each nucleus forms a lump at the centre.
        • Scaly
        • Very delicate and thin.
      • Function:
        • To allow materials to pass through
          • Diffusion
            • The passage of molecules from high to low concentration
          • Osmosis
            • The passage of water molecules from high to low concentration
      • Location:
        • Lungs
          • Alveoli
        • Blood Capillaries
        • Kidneys
          • Bowman's Capsules of Nephrons
    • Simple Columnar Epithelial
      • Structure:
        • Taller
        • Slightly oval nuclei.
        • Often have cilia (microscopic filaments)
          • Cilia - Tiny hair like organelles attached to he cell surface
      • Function:
        • Main function is protection.
          • Provides a barrier against any bacteria that could be ingested.
        • Move particles/ fluid over the epithelial cells and  out of the body
          • Cilia.
      • Location:
        • Trachea
        • Bronchial Tubes
        • Nasal Cavaties
        • Stomach Walls
          • Interior and Exterior
        • Fallopian Tubes
          • Small Intestine
    • Compound (Stratified) Epithelial
      • Structure:
        • Several layers of cells.
        • Lowest layer of cells are connected to a basement membrane.
          • Basement membrane divides and the older cells are pushed upwards.
      • Function:
        • To protect deeper structures and multiple layers of cells and to hamper the passage of materials.
        • Keratinized epithelium is a type of epithelial tissue that us composed of keratinized cells.
          • Keratin is protein that helps form hair, nails, and outer layer of skin which gives tissue its tough waterproof proterties.
            • This is to help protect against pathogens.
      • Location:
        • Vagina
        • Oesophagus
        • Mouth
        • Tongue
