- Ecology definitions
- Ecology: All the living and non-living components and how they interact within a habitat
- Habitat: A place where an organism lives
- Population: All of the same species in the same habitat and the same time who can interbreed
- Community: all the organism of different species, in the same habitat which interact with each other
- Biotic factors: Factors caused by living components e.g. food/ disease
- Abiotic factor: Factors caused by non-living componants e.g. temperature/ pH of soil
- Niche: The role an organism plays in an ecosystem e.g. what they eat/ how they reproduce
- Producers: Convert light energy into chemical energy to supply other organisms.
- Consumers: feed on another organisms
- Decomposer: Feed on waste or dead material as nutrients are trapped in waste material and it allows them to be recycled
- Consumers: feed on another organisms
- Mutualistic: The way in which two organisms benefit each other
- Primary succession: Break up the rock surface so a pioneer species takes form. More organic matter builds up to become stable and has a dominant species
- Secondary succession: Existing community is cleared and plants begin to grow
- Deflected succession: Grazing, mowing or burning and human activity prevents succession from happening
- Anthropogenic factors: Can be biotic or abiotic factors arising from human activity
