      • main points-
        • strong US-GB relations were required to stop the spread of communism and maintain peace
        • the US must play an active role in world affairs
      • importance -
        • it helped bolster amerce and Western European opposition to communist and the USSR
        • it worsened relations between USSR and the west
    • Truman doctrine -
      • 1947
      • in a speech, Truman explained why the USA should get involved in the war
      • Reasons -
        • countries faced a choice between either capitalism or communism
        • communism was bad because it meant people could not be free
        • the USA must try to contain the spread of communism
        • the USA should provide money and troops to help countries combat communism
    • Marshall plan
      • 1947
        • Aid given from US to countries threatened by communism
      • $13 billion from USA to help rebuild Europe
      • communism appealed most to people with nothing to lose, so the Marshall plan hoped to stop communism by giving people aid
      • countries must trade with the USA to get the money
      • 16 Western European countries took the money
      • the USSR criticised the Marshall plan as an attack on them because it threatened communist control on Eastern Europe
    • Cominform -
      • communist information bureau
      • 1947
      • it organised all the communist countries in Europe and arranged their leadership so they would do what USSR told them
      • key points -
        • com inform got rid of any opposition to the USSR's control of satellite states
        • it encouraged communist parties in the west to refuse the Marshall plan
    • Comecon -
      • 1949
      • it was the USSR's alternative to the Marshall plan
      • key points -
        • it built up trade links between Comecon countries
        • it prevented Comecon countries signing up top the marshal plan
        • incl = Bulgaria, czech, Hungary, Poland etc
