- Cell membranes hold the cell together AND let stuff in and out as well.
- Dissolved substances can move in an out of cells by diffusion.
- Only very small molecules can diffuse though cell membranes - things like oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water.
- Big molecules like starch and proteins can't fit through the membrane.
- Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
- Diffusion happens in solutions and gasses because the particles are free to move around randomly.
- The bigger the difference in concentration, the faster the diffusion rate.
- The simplest type of diffusion is when different gasses diffuse through each other, like perfume diffusing through the air in a room.
