- CRITICISMS FOR JUNG
- JUNG'S METHODOLOGY
- we cannot know if God exists because nothing can be known outside the psychic world. e.g. we can never know if a religious experience is real or just created by the mind.
- however, this assumption has been questioned. this is because scientists base their conclusions on empirical evidence so religious experiences should be treated in the same way
- we cannot know if God exists because nothing can be known outside the psychic world. e.g. we can never know if a religious experience is real or just created by the mind.
- JUNG'S THEORY OF ARCHETYPES
- Geza Roheim- since all humans share the same experiences it is not surprising we develop myths along similar lines. e.g. we are all born so this therefore generates the images of rebirth
- many ppl do not believe in God so does that still mean they truly have the God archetype. Jung's answer to this would be: atheism is a form of religion. however he fails to show empirical evidence.
- JUNG'S CONCEPT OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCES
- Buber- not convinced that an experience which stems from the mind can properly be termed religious.
- How can Jung argue that all images are religious experiences? He has failed to preserve the uniqueness of religious experiences. e.g. a vision of being trapped in armour is as religious as a vision of God.
- THE ROLE OF RELIGION WITHIN INDIVIDUATION
- Jung argues that the image of Christ is a symbol of wholeness that helps balance our minds. Christians however would say that Christ is more than just a symbol: as a historical person and the son of God. so this would be highly offensive to Christians.
