- Connectionist Theory
- Involves connecting a stimulus to a response
- Connection forms a stimulus - response bond ( S-R bond)
- S-R bond is formed and strengthened by the process of reinforcemet
- Connection forms a stimulus - response bond ( S-R bond)
- Reinforcement is the process that causes a response to reoccur by forming and strengthening the S-R learning bond
- There are 2 types of reinforcement
- Positive Reinforcement
- 1 After successful response, teacher gives PRAISE
- 3 Praise = 'well done!'
- 2 Praise is given as a SATISFIER which forms S-R bond
- Negative Reinforcement
- 1 Involves withdrawing a negative or aversive stimulus
- 2 E.g. a teacher may show disapproval when a poor response is given by the learner
- 3 When the learner eventually responds correctly the aversive stimulus of disapproval is withdrawn and replaced by satisfier
- 4 Negative reinforcement weakens the incorrect learning bond but it also strengthens the correct learning bond
- Positive Reinforcement
- Punishment
- Involves giving a noxious stimulus to a performer to prevent a response from occuring
- Operant Conditioning is major connectionist theory
- it is effective in the learning of motor programmes and in the encouragement of BAHL
- Involves connecting a stimulus to a response
