      • both were firm believers in the Divine Right of Kings and were defensive of their prerogatives
      • however polar opposites when it came to the balance between the enforcement of the Royal prerogative and the powers of parliament
        • James was able to distinguish between the theory of rule and the realities of ruling
          • saw himself as a peacemaker king through foreign policy and sought to compromise when it came to relations with the political nation
        • unwilling to negotiate and the nature of his court led to political divisions

      • intellectual and pragmatic - very good at dealing with people

      • often open to discussion with his courtiers
      • his intellect would also shine through his court
      • however there were some small tensions

          • this scottish access made the rest of the court relatively uneasy

      • very isolated - imposed strict order over his court
        • only made up of his supporters and so didn't have any differing opinions
      • dominated by Arminians
        • caused further tensions as seen as too Catholic and Catholicism was seen as a form of absolutism
    • the favourites of James I
      • became close to a range of male courtiers during his reign
        • because they were all men they had the ability to wield open political power
          • this was a major source of tension in both courts
      • was open regarding his sexuality and attraction to male courtiers - something which would cause further tension in the court
        • gave the court the reputation of being immoral and debauched

        • had political skills and so was a favourite of Charles - James' relationship was more sexual

      • shy with a speech defect
      • not very approachable or good at communication
        • becomes a problem when it comes to tensions with parliament
      • his royal prerogative was overused since he was deeply paranoid
      • very stubborn and unwilling to compromise
