- Psychotic disorder
- psychotic refers to the experience of the disorder as a loss of contact with reality-being delusional
- Schizophrenia
- 'positive' symptoms-the addition of new behaviours such as delusions and hallucinations
- 'negative' symptoms-include a removal or loss of normal function e.g. poverty of speech and flattening of emotion
- symptoms of SZ are not immediately recognisable and changes may begin slowly, symptoms may overlap with other disorders
- 1 in 100 will be diagnosed with SZ during their lifetime
- Anxiety disorder
- fear is an emotional response to a real (or perceived) threat
- specific phobias
- anxiety is the expectation of the threat
- a phobia is an intense, severe and irrational fear that produces a psychological response such as sweating, shaking
- symptoms of phobia
- phobic stimulus provokes immediate fear and anxiety
- phobic distress is persistent lasts 6 months or more
- phobic stimulus deliberately avoided or endured with strong anxiety or fear
- phobias effect around 6% of people in the UK
- Affective disorder
- mood disorders such as depression or mania
- range from mild to severe
- the 'highs and lows' of life have a damaging impact on the individuals capacity to function
- symptoms of major depressive disorder
- MAIN- depressed mood for most/all if the day, nearly everyday
- MAIN- loss of interest in all or most activities (present in the past two weeks)
- significant weight/appetite loss or gain
- frequency insomnia or hypersomnia
- excessive feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- 5 symptoms are required for diagnosis, with either of there 2 main symptoms having being present
- Psychotic disorder
