  • Chapter 5.
    • Nature of performance.
      • Performance = execution of skill at a given time.
      • Factors affect performance.
        • New experience?
        • Over arousal
        • Opponents
        • Injury/Fatigue etc
    • Stages of Motor Skill Learning.
      • 3 Stages = Cognitive, Associative & Autonomous
        • ASSOCIATIVE:
          • Basics of skill have been learnt.
          • Started to become consistent
          • Kinaesthetic feel is starting.
        • AUTONOMOUS:
          • Peformance is automatic.
          • HABITUAL
          • Performed without stress.
      • COGNITIVE:
        • First phase = beginner.  Need to be taught basics of skill
    • Relationship between learning & performance.
      • Performance is NOT learning - performance REFLECTS learning.
      • Why use performance curves?
        • To record skill
        • Can show a relationship between practice & performance
      • What else might a coach use?
        • ICT
        • Log Books
        • Performance diaries.
      • Performance curves:
        • Positive = small improvements & then a sudden improvement
        • Negative = huge improvements early on and then success doen't continue
        • Linear: proportional improvement.
        • S-shaped curve: combination of postive, negative and linear curves = PLATEAU
          • How do you combat plateau?
            • Change coaching strategies
            • Offer extrinsic awards
            • Balanced competitions.
            • Change roles/postitions = team
    • Types, Structure & Presentation of practice.
      • MASSED:
        • Continous
        • WHO? experienced, older, fitter. Team/
        • TASK? Short & Discrete
      • DISTRIBUTED:
        • Breaks
        • WHO? Beginner, less experienced
        • Task? Complex & potentially dangerous.
      • FIXED:
        • Repetition
        • WHO? Beginner
        • TASK? closed skills
      • VARIED:
        • Mixture of massed & distributed
        • WHO? anyone
        • TASK? any
    • Types of Guidance.
      • 4 types of guidance = Visual, Verbal, Manual & Mechanical
        • Verbal = talking to group/individual
        • Manual = moving a learners limbs into the correct place
        • Mechanical = reducing risks by artifically supporting a learner
        • Visual = films, demonstration etc.
    • Mental Practice
      • Cognitive rehearsal of skill.
      • WHY? good practice, can compare with a bad experience.
        • used in dangerous situations.
      • WHO? Individual performers mainly.
      • WHAT CAN IT ACHIEVE? stimulate a movement, mental warm up, can control arousal levels.
