      • Japan's industry was silk-based. Nobody bought silk in time of Depression.
      • Japan was suffering from the Depression badly.
      • Japan thought that China may expel Japanese industry
    • Government
      • Political instability; PM was murdered by the army.
      • The army and the government did not get along. The army hated Manchuria and thought politicians were crazy for wanting to protect relations.
      • They had a large foothold in Manchuria (the railway)
