- Blood Vessels
- Arteries
- Where blood flows out of the heart under high pressure.
- Have thick walls made of muscle and elastic tissue.
- Elastic tissue allows the artery to expand when blood is forced through it.
- Veins
- Have much thinner walls than arteries as the blood flowing through them is at a much lower pressure.
- Have valves to prevent back-flow in long veins (leg)
- Capillaries
- The smallest blood vessels.
- Where substances pass in and out of the blood.
- Have very thin walls (one cell thick) to allow substances to pass in and out easily.
