Biology - B4 - Mindmap 1

GCSE Level - Combined Science Foundation Level - OCR Gateway

Please enjoy my mindmap, it is only a small part of B4 but includes BBC Bitesize's information so it is deffinatley correct! :)

  • Biology - B4
    • Cycling of Materials on the Earth
      • Biotic = Living
        • e.g plants
      • Abiotic = Non Living
        • e.g soil
      • The Nitrogen Cycle
        • Step 1: Nitrogen in soil is absorbed by plants which are then eaten by animals
        • Step 2: Animals release nitrogen through processes such as excretion and egestion
        • Step 3: Animal waste and dead animals are broken down by bacteria which returns nitrogen to the soil
      • Importance of Microorganisms
        • Decompoing bacteria and fungi are important microorganisms
          • Break down dead organisms
        • Hep return minerals and nutrient back into the environment
        • Also releases carbon dioxide to create the nitrogen cycle
      • The Carbon Cycle
        • Step 1: Carbon enters the atmosphere as carbon dioxide from respiration and combustion
        • Step 2: Carbon dioxide is absorbed by producers to make carbohydrates in photosynthesis.
        • Step 3: Animals feed on plants, passing the carbon compounds along the food chain. Most carbon they consume is exhaled as carbon dioxide during respiration. The animals and plants eventually die.
        • Step 4: Dead organisms are eaten by decomposers and carbon in their bodies is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. In some conditions decomposition is blocked. The plant and animal material may then be available as fossil fuel in the future for combustion.
      • The Water Cycle
        • Evaporaion
        • Condensation
        • Transport
        • Precipitation
        • Surface runoff
        • Infiltration
        • Transpiration
    • Organisation in Ecosystems
      • Communities are affected by abiotic factors
        • Light Intensity
        • Temperature
        • Moisture Levels
        • pH of Soil
      • Communities are affected by biotic factors
        • Availability of Food
        • Presence of New Predator
        • Competition between Organisms
      • Competition in a Community
        • All organisms within a community compete for survival
        • If there is a new species in the ecosystem, competition is harder and less organism urvive
      • Interdependence
        • Organisms rely on each other for survival
      • Mutualism
        • When two organisms work together
        • Both organisms benefit from the relationship
      • Parasitism
        • Organisms that live on a host organism
