  • Becoming an Elite Performer
    • social and cultural factors
      • whether performers have support from family and friends - giving emotional support
      • there school/uni experience - whether schools had a strategy to encourage talented individual to become elite
      • whether there's infrastructure to develop e.g. club access and talent identification programmes
      • level of media coverage a sport gets e.g. a lot of coverage = more role models = higher participation levels
      • anti-discriminationpolicies allowing equal opportunities for everyone
    • characteristics of an effective talent identification programme
      • widespread testing programme e.g. all ages
      • Knowledgeable = high quality scouts/coaches to spot talent
      • High quality testing of physiological and psychological skills
      • database for comparison
      • Co-ordination between organisations
      • structured competition for progression routes
    • Barriers to progression
      • social class - lack of financial support = a barrier. Some sports provide financial support = progression to elite level = easier than in other sports where there's little funding
      • disability - 9% of those with disabilities compete in sports. They have a lack media coverage = less well known = less role models
      • Ethnic differences - UK African or Caribbean individual stereotyped to have a physiological advantage in sports requiring speed and power. Over representation in certain sports e.g. football and underrepresentation in others such as tennis
      • Gender - fewer women reach top level. Even when women reach the top level they're paid less. Media focuses on appearance not performance. Not feminine to have a 'muscley' body
