- Fat
- Whole milk and dairy products should be consumed to meet high energy requirements
- Carbohydrates
- Small portions of complex carbohydrates should be introduded
- Avoid too much NSP as very bulky and difficult to digest
- Limit wholegrain foods
- Protein
- Requirements increase moderately throughout this stage to help growth occur
- Calcium
- Required for healthy tooth and bone development
- Iron
- After 6 months iron stores are depleted and must be fulfilled from the diet
- Sodium
- Cannot cope with high levels of sodium as kidneys are not fully developed
- Vitamin A
- Needed for healthy skin and brain development during this period of rapid growth
- Vitamin D
- Assists absorption of calcium to help bones and teeth
- B Group Vitamins
- Vitamin B1 helps with the release of energy required during this time of rapid growth and activity
- Vitamin C
- Assists absorption of iron from food
- Improves immunity and prevents infections common at this stage of development
- Water
- Fluid intake is important at this stage to maintain body temperature and prevent constipation
