- Atoms, Elements, The Periodic Table & Compounds
- Atoms & Elements
- middle of the atom = protons and neutrons.
- protons = +1 electrons = -1 neutrons = 0
- electrons move around the nucleus in shells
- if electrons are added/removed then becomes an ion.
- number of protons = number of nuetrons
- if substance contains one type of element then atom.
- Compounds
- ionic bonding = when a metal and nonmetal bond. Consists of ions, metal loses and non-metal gains. opposite charges attract
- when elements rect they form chemical bonds and become compounds
- bonding involves giving/taking/ssharing electrons
- covalent bonding = nonmetals, molecules, share electrons, fill each others outer shell.
- Electron Shells
- 2,8,8
- lowest filled first
- electrons occupy shells
- much more stable if have a full outer shell
- mostly not full, so atom wants to react/bond and fill it.
- The Periodic Table
- mass number = number of protons and neutrons.
- atomic number = number of protons
- elements with similar properties form groups, columns
- same group = same number of electrons on outer shell
- full outer shell = unreactive and stable.
