  • Aeneid Modern Scholarship
    • Aeneid & Augustus
      • -Tarrant- Virgil close to Aug- Aug writes to Virgil when he's away from Rome
    • Aeneas Characteristics
      • -Hardie- Aeneas seems colourless because of the roles forced on him by the plot & circumstances beyond his control
      • -Lyne- Aeneas' interactions with others are minimal- Virgil neglects his relationships w/ others
    • Aeneid as poetry
      • -Muir- Uses Homer as inspiration & needs to connect Homer's unfamiliar & heroic past to modern & urban leader
    • Portrayal of Other Nations
      • -Gildenhard- How Dido & the Carthaginians are portrayed affect contemporary Roman issues e.g imperialism
      • -Syed- Virgil uses the different nations e.g Trojans, Latins, Carthaginians for the Roman reader to work out what is really 'Roman'
    • Gender & Sexuality
      • -Oliensis- gender follows stereotype- feminine unruly passion, masculinity- reasoned & controlled- women who portray this stereotype & submit to masculine plot do well e.g. Creusa (family), Lavinia
      • -Reilly- Some women simultaneously a threat to Roman traditional gender roles & portray Roman values e.g. Dido, powerful but also patriot and brave
    • Heroism
      • -Aeneas is a puppet lacking human emotion
      • -Ross- Heroes need to be flawed otherwise not satisfying
    • Family Values
      • -Rogerson- Ascanius is used throughout to represent the future
    • Portrayal of War
      • -Semple- War needs to be presented somewhat positively due to Roman Empire- Aug empire building but Virgil deeply affected by civil war
      • -Adler- Aeneas' war brings an end to the constant wars between the italians
