- Energy Basics
- Transferring Energy
- Mechanically - object moves due to a force
- Electrically - charge moves through a P.D.
- Heating - energy transferred from hot to cold
- Radiation - energy transferred by light/sound waves
- Useful Energy
- Energy is useful when it is transferred to a useful store
- Some input energy is always wasted, often as heat/sound
- Less energy wasted means the device is more efficient
- Wasted energy is normally transferred to the surroundings where it dissipates
- Heating Transfers
- Conduction
- Vibrating particles transfer kinetic energy to other particles around them
- Occurs in solids where particles are tightly packed together
- As more particles vibrate, more energy is spread throughout the solid so its temperature rises
- Convection
- More energetic particles move from warmer to cooler areas
- Occurs in liquids and gases where particles can move more
- Convection currents are changes in density of the particles
- Radiation
- IR radiation is always being emmited
- Hotter objects emit more than it absorbs, vice versa for cold objects
- Conduction
- Transferring Energy
